David B. Yaden, PhD is an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His research focus is on the psychology and psychopharmacology of life-changing experiences. Specifically, he is interested in understanding how some inner experiences, or altered states of consciousness, can result in long-term changes to well-being.
He wrote an article "The Overview Effect: Awe and Self-Transcendent Experience in Space Flight," that grounds the overview effect in contemporary scientific research and he recently wrote a book on the past, present, and future of the scientific study of altered states of consciousness, The Varieties of Spiritual Experience.
